Born in Philadelphia, both sides of his family descended
from late nineteenth century Lithuanian immigrants. Edward
Wallowitch pursued his talent for photography early and began
taking photos when he was just eleven.
At the age of eighteen, he was the youngest photographer
to be included in “The Family of Man”, Edward Steichen’s
legendary exhibition held in 1955 at The Museum of Modern
Art, meaning he was the youngest photographer ever to have
prints in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Two of
them were taken with a Brownie box reflex camera while he
was still at high school.
Wallowitch was a close friend of Andy Warhol in the 1950s
and 60s in New York. By then he had moved from Philadelphia
to Manhattan and had become an integral part of the
Greenwich Village bohemia, alongside his brother John, and
sister Anna Mae. Wallowitch produced a kind of poetic street
photography with strong sensibility, showing a tender eye
for both composition and texture. He spent a lot of his time
photographing children and teenagers.
Many of Wallowitch’s pictures served as source material for
Andy Warhol’s drawings. He died at the age of 48, cause of
death unknown.

More than 30 years after his death in 1987, Andy Warhol
remains one of the best-known and most influential figures in
contemporary art and culture. His paintings have become iconic,
his personality has attained cult status, his films are legendary,
and his forecast that in the future everyone would be famous
for fifteen minutes is our quotidian reality.

PARISPHOTO – WOMEN HOUSE AND LYON BIENNIAL – VIRGINIE PUERTOLAS-SYN – FRENCH UPDATE
PARISPHOTO – WOMEN HOUSE AND LYON BIENNIAL – VIRGINIE PUERTOLAS-SYN – FRENCH UPDATE

Autumn is always a hectic yet enjoyable season for the art lover in France – my favourite time of year in the busy art world calendar. I had just recovered from the excitement of Frieze and Fiac when I decided to venture to the 21st edition of Paris Photo, Women House and the Lyon Biennial. ParisPhoto is now considered the world’s leading photography fair. This year they gathered 160 galleries from 30 countries at the Grand Palais from the 8-12 of November. Karl Lagerfeld was the guest of honour, selecting about 100 works all over the fair with a clear preference for black and white photographs. (…)

Frieze NY 2017 – True Vintage

May 5, 2017 — May 7, 2017

In our first exhibition at FRIEZE New York we are delighted to present, True Vintage, a selection of rare and newly discovered treasures. The highlight of True Vintage is Lunch Atop a Skyscraper. In 1932, an unidentified photographer, climbed 70 stories to the top of the RCA building in the final months of its construction, and captured one of the most recognizable and important photographs in American history. Eleven intrepid steel workers are seen enjoying lunch as they sit on a steel beam 800ft above the city streets. It’s a dazzling spectacle to see. Taken September 20, 1932 and printed within two weeks, we were thrilled at the discovery since the original glass negative is broken and we could not locate a single vintage print. This is the earliest known print from the original, unaltered negative. Every detail is vividly present and preserved in stunning clarity. This is one of the most important discoveries in recent American photographic history. Further discoveries in True Vintage, explore vintage works by three photographers: Weegee, Edward Wallowitch and Margaret Bourke-White. Each of these photographers challenged their social context and surroundings through the lens of the camera. Viewed against the backdrop of their time, True Vintage explores the relationship of the outsider and immigrant through their lens. They are enduring testaments to the American landscape and the ideals of inclusion rather than exclusion. They form a discussion that is still relevant today. Their photographs present a dialogue, both with photographer and subject, but also with the viewer and our current context. highlights the importance of the outsider and their outstanding contributions to photography and culture in general.
